9 Essential Spray Tan Tips

September 23, 2012

These days, the best and safest way to bring some colour to your complexion is with a spray tan. Spray tanning enables you to get that natural looking golden glow, without having to expose your skin to harmful UV rays. We’ve all heard (or experienced) those tanning horror stories of orange, streaky and uneven fake tans, but the good news is that these are easily avoidable by following a few simple steps before, during and after your spray tan. To achieve a good, natural looking and long-lasting spray tan, follow these 10 essential spray tan tips.

1. Shower before your spray tanning session. Taking a shower beforehand gets rid of any impurities, dirt or accumulated lotions, deodorants or creams you have previously applied, which can work as a barrier to your spray tan making it not absorbed well by the skin.

2. Exfoliate or scrub the skin. Exfoliation is one of the most important spray tan tips to keep in mind. Prior to your tan, ensure you scrub the skin with a light scrub will remove the dead skin cells to reveal the new, healthy skin under it. Removing these dead skin cells will give an even and long-lasting tan because spray tanning only works on the uppermost layer of the skin.

3. Moisturise your skin before the spray tanning session. Use a good water-based moisturiser so that the skin becomes hydrated and is still able to absorb the spray tan solution. Do not use an oil based moisturiser as this will work as a barrier to the spray tan.

4. Always shave or wax before spray tanning. Shaving or waxing afterwards will only remove your tan and make it uneven. Try to shave at least 2 days before the session so that the pores have closed when you spray tan. The tanning solution can get into the pores and create a spotty look.

5. Do not wear jewellery, deodorant or perfume before the tanning session. These permeate into the skin and interfere with the spray tanning solution and prevent it from being absorbed properly by the skin.

6. Stay away from sweaty activities like exercising and sports for at least 4 hours after your spray tan has been applied. Sweat can create streaks on your tan. You should also avoid swimming after your tanning session so that the spray tan doesn’t fade.

7. Moisturise frequently after your spray tan. By keeping your skin soft and hydrated, you will make the tan last longer. This is because dead skin cells will not shed off if your skin is moisturised as it holds the cells to your body. Moisturise every time after you shower and ensure you apply a moisturiser in both day and night.

8. Take care of your hands and feet during while spray tanning . Apply a cream or barrier cream on your palms and soles because the skin on these areas is drier than the rest of the body. This makes them more prone to absorbing the tanning solution, which eventually will make your palms and soles darker than the rest of your tanned body. Another important sprat tan tip is to be careful around your elbows and knees. You can apply a barrier cream or moisturiser to these areas so less of the spray tan solution is absorbed.

9. Wear loose and dark coloured clothes after tanning. This is because the tanning solution will bleed onto the clothes if it has not been fully absorbed into the skin yet. The last thing you want is to ruin your favourite outfit!
